How Should We Think About Money?

Keep An Eye On Your Cashflow

One of the major downfalls of most businesses is not keeping a good eye on cash flow. Cash flow is where the availability of cash is in your business. You may have money coming from jobs you have completed, but if they have not sent the check, you cannot use it to pay your bills. The unavailability of cash can stop you from taking on good business. Therefore keeping an eye on the money flow can be a daunting task for the business owner.

As a Christian business owner, you may want to take it by faith that you will be paid. This is a dangerous trap because your collectors will not have the same faith in you and your employees may not have the luxury to wait on their paychecks. Having cash on hand for the normal business of your company is essential for your sanity.

How Should We Think About Money?

With this in mind, what do you do when your insurance premiums double for no known reason? What do you do when you get a fine that is unreasonable? How are we supposed to act when we have unexpected expenditures? What do you do when someone steals from you?

Jesus says we are to give to those who ask from us. “If someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well” (Matthew 5:40). Does this also apply for your business? What about all of the other bills that you have to make? Doing this could very well put an end to my business.

    All Wealth Comes From God

This is the point where we have to put our faith in Jesus’ words that all wealth comes from God. Sometimes He has to add extra expenditures to help you remember that it is not all up to you. The stretching of your faith purposes greater opportunities to receive more of God’s provisions.

What does this look like practically? Work reasonably in making money. But hold on to what you make loosely. The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10). Anyone who loves wealth, never has enough income (Ecclesiastes 5:10). God says He will take care of our needs (Matthew 6:33). Focus on the top two commandments: love God and love others. If you do this and believe God wants to provide for your needs, you will put yourself in a position to receive the wealth from God.
