God is Not Hiding His Will From You
There is a quiet fear that follows many Christians through life. It’s the fear that somewhere along the way, we missed God’s will. Maybe it was a relationship that didn’t work out, a job we didn’t take, or an opportunity that slipped by. We look back at detours, disappointments, and delays and wonder if we somehow stepped off the path God intended for us. This fear can weigh heavily, whispering that we’ve ruined something God planned.
We imagine God’s will as a fragile, hidden trail deep in the woods; one wrong turn and we’re lost forever. That picture creates anxiety, not faith. It makes us believe God’s plan is delicate, easily broken, and dependent on our flawless decision‑making. But Scripture paints a very different picture of God’s guidance.
God is not hiding His will from you. He is leading you into it. He has been working in your life far longer than you realize, orchestrating events with purpose. Even when you felt abandoned or confused, He was there. Even when doors closed and plans fell apart, His river was still flowing.
This is the heart behind the song “Let Your River Flow.” The song reminds us that God’s guidance is less like following a rigid map and more like stepping into a river that is already moving. His Spirit is constantly flowing, carrying us toward the life He designed for us. The opening verse captures this beautifully: “I’ve seen Your hand in every turn, Every lesson I had to learn… Your Spirit whispered, ‘I am here.'” God’s river has been flowing long before you noticed it.
The Fear of Missing God’s Will
Many believers live with the fear that they will somehow miss God’s plan. We question our choices: the school we picked, the job we took, the city we moved to. We imagine God has one perfect plan, and if we don’t find it, we spend the rest of our lives living Plan B.
But that mindset gives far too much power to our mistakes and far too little to God’s sovereignty.
Scriptures remind us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5–6). The pressure is not on us to perfectly interpret every detail. The invitation is simply to trust Him. His plan is not fragile. His leadership is not weak. His grace is not limited by our confusion.
I wrote this line in the song to remind us of this truth: “You are my peace; You give me grace. When I am with You, You make a way.” God’s will is not something you can easily miss. It is something He faithfully leads you into.
Looking Back and Seeing the River
One of the greatest gifts of walking with God is looking back and finally seeing what He was doing all along.
My wife and I spent nearly $50,000 pursuing adoption. Twice we thought we were close, and twice the doors closed. One adoption ended when we unexpectedly and joyfully became pregnant. Another ended when China assigned our referral to a different family. It was painful, confusing, and honestly heartbreaking.
At the same time, we sensed God nudging us to relocate across the country. The move felt abrupt and strange, but it only became possible because the adoption process had ended.
Within a week of arriving in California, my wife met a woman fleeing an abusive marriage. She and her daughter lived with us for a season. In that moment, we realized the urgency of our move wasn’t about us at all. God had positioned us for them.
Later, God led us to China to serve orphan girls. We built a business that gave these girls both a family and a future. We hired a Chinese couple to help us and only later learned they were struggling with infertility. Through their work with us, and through a teenage pregnant girl they brought in, God opened the door for them to adopt her baby.
Looking back now, I can see what I couldn’t see then: the river was flowing the whole time. The failed adoptions weren’t failures at all… they were redirects. Each step of obedience opened a path for someone else’s miracle. Our story was woven into a much larger story we never could have thought possible.
“When I couldn’t see where I was, Your river kept flowing just because.”
Surrender Is Not Losing
One of the most powerful lines in the song declares: “I’m saying yes to Your lead, Take me further than I’ve dreamed.” This is the essence of surrender. It’s not losing control; it’s giving up control to God. It’s stepping into the current of God’s Spirit. The world teaches us to grip tighter, plan harder, and control more. But God often invites us to do the opposite: trust more, listen more, follow more.
When we stop fighting for control and begin yielding to His leadership, we discover that His plans are far better than anything we could design. His river carries us further than our striving ever could.
When God Uses Disappointment
Not every disappointment is punishment. Sometimes disappointment is redirection.
Years ago, I was a volunteer staff at a church, convinced I would eventually step into a paid role. When the opportunity finally came, they hired someone else. I felt overlooked and confused. But that disappointment pushed me to listen more carefully to God’s voice. Ultimately led me into business school, opening doors I never would have considered.
What felt like rejection became a pathway into something new. This is often how God’s river flows. Our circumstances may look like mistakes, but everything works together for the good… Even through disappointment, God often leads us to unexpected blessing.
“You’ve carried me time and again… I don’t know where I’d be today If Your mercy hadn’t paved the way.”
God Is More Committed to His Plan Than You Are
One of the most comforting truths is this: God is more committed to fulfilling His purpose for your life than you are.
We spend so much energy trying to figure out what we’re supposed to do. Meanwhile, the Holy Spirit is actively guiding, correcting, teaching, and leading us every day. “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, you will hear a voice behind you saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it'” (Isaiah 30:21).
You are not navigating life alone. God is not passive. He is actively leading you.
The River Is Still Flowing
Maybe you feel behind right now. Maybe you see delays, disappointments, unanswered prayers, or closed doors. But what if God sees something different? What if He sees a story still unfolding? What if His river still flowing?
God works all things together for good (Romans 8:28). Not some things. All things.
“Your current’s pulling me To depths within Your mystery… I’m jumping in Your river, No turning back, I’m completely Yours.”
A Simple Invitation
If you’ve been striving to figure everything out, maybe it’s time to stop fighting the current. You don’t need to see every turn in the river. You don’t need to understand every chapter of your story. You simply need to keep saying yes to God’s lead.
Declare: “Let Your river flow… Holy Spirit, carry me.” Because throughout your entire life, God has been with you. He has never left your side. And the river has never stopped flowing.
God is still carrying you, even now. He is leading you into the future He has prepared for you.
Lyrics for Let Your River Flow
Let Your River Flow
[Verse 1]
I’ve seen Your hand in every turn
Every lesson I had to learn
When I was lost, You pulled me near
Your Spirit whispered, “I am here”
You’ve been my comfort through the fight
My steady peace in sleepless nights
Now I can see what I didn’t know
You’ve been the strength that made me grow
[Pre-Chorus]
You are my peace; You give me grace
When I am with You, You make a way
[Chorus]
Let Your river flow
Wash over my soul
Move in power, move in peace
Holy Spirit, carry me
I’m saying yes to Your lead
Take me further than I’ve dreamed
Where You lead, I’ll go
Let Your river flow
[Verse 2]
You’ve been my fire, You’ve been my friend
You’ve carried me time and again
When I couldn’t see where I was
Your river kept flowing just because
When I gave in and abided still
You taught my heart to trust Your will
I don’t know where I’d be today
If Your mercy hadn’t paved the way
[Pre-Chorus]
I lift my song to sing
Your river is everything
[Bridge]
I give You all my days
I’ll follow You in every way
Your current’s pulling me
To depths within Your mystery
I’m jumping in Your river
No turning back, I’m completely Yours
I’m stepping in forever
Where living waters pour
[Outro]
Let Your river flow
Let Your river flow
Let Your river flow
