You Can Hear the Voice of God

God, You Speak — Learning to Hear the Voice of God

Many Christians believe God speaks, yet hearing Him personally can feel elusive. Too often we assume that hearing God is reserved for the spiritually elite, the pastors, missionaries, or those with obvious gifts. That assumption breeds doubt and a quiet sense of inadequacy: if God speaks, why not to me? The truth is simpler and more hopeful: hearing God is part of the identity of every believer. I wrote the song “God, You Speak” to become a helpful companion for anyone learning to listen, because it names the subtle ways God communicates and gives us language to respond.

Hearing Is Part of Being His Sheep

Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice” (John 10:27). This statement reframes the whole question. Hearing God is not for special Christians; it is a mark of relationship with all believers. God did not save us to leave us to fend for ourselves until heaven. He saved us to walk with us, to guide, comfort, and shape us. Communication is the lifeblood of relationship, and Scripture shows God speaking in many forms: through Scripture, through other people, through circumstances, and through impressions that settle in the heart.

Why Hearing God Often Feels Difficult

One reason hearing God is hard is that His voice rarely arrives as a thunderclap. Like Elijah, God wasn’t in the wind, earthquake, or fire; it was in the small voice (1 Kings 19:11-12). More often it comes as a thought, a picture in the mind, a verse that suddenly glows, or a conviction that won’t go away.

Because these impressions are subtle, we can dismiss them as wishful thinking or our own imagination. That uncertainty is normal. When I sense God speaking, I sometimes pray, “God, I believe this is You; redirect me if I’m wrong.” That prayer is not a sign of weak faith but of a relationship that values relationship over certainty.

Another barrier is expectation. We expect correction or rebuke, so when God’s voice is tender and affirming we doubt it. Yet God’s heart toward us is often to name and restore, not to shame. The song captures this: “You don’t speak to shame me. You speak to name me.” That line reminds us that God’s words land in our hearts to bring life, not condemnation.

    How God Usually Speaks

God’s voice aligns with His character and with Scripture. He will never contradict the Bible or call us to actions that violate His nature. He often speaks:

    • Through Scripture — a verse that suddenly applies with fresh clarity.
    • Through prayer impressions — a persistent thought or peace about a decision.
    • Through community — a friend, pastor, or trusted believer who echoes God’s heart.
    • Through circumstances — doors opening or closing that confirm a sense of direction.
    • Through anything — in reality, God can speak through anything, as long as our thoughts are on Him.

As we practice listening, we learn to test impressions against Scripture and wise counsel. The more time we spend with God, the more familiar His words become. They are generally: gentle, restorative, and life-giving.

The Song as a Listening Tool

God, You Speak functions like a short declaration of belief. It names the ways God draws us near: not by shouting, but by reminding us of our purpose and identity. The lyrics repeatedly emphasize that God’s voice brings life and clarity: He calls us chosen, free, and destined. The bridge offers a simple corrective to shame: “You’re saying I’m strong when I feel weak.” These words help reframe inner narratives about God’s desire to speak to us and what He may say.

Listen to to this song often, let a single line sink in, and ask God to show you where a specific truth needs to replace a lie. The song’s language gives us phrases to pray back to God when our minds are crowded with doubt.

Practical Steps to Grow in Hearing

    1. Read Scripture slowly. Allow His word to fill your mind. Notice places where your mind seems to linger.
    2. Create time to listen. Grab a journal and ask God, “What do You want to say to me?”
    3. Write down what you get. Just write what comes to mind and test it later. Judging now breaks your connection with God.
    4. Test impressions. Now, compare what you got with Scripture. Seek counsel from trusted believers before taking big risks.
    5. Speak truth aloud. Use what God spoke or Scripture to increase your faith. This song intends to help you, as well.
    6. Practice regularly. Hearing grows by repetition and relationship, not by a single dramatic event.

These practices help you move from occasional impressions to an increased trust of God’s speaking to you.

    An Invitation to Listen

My goal with this article is to get you to start your journey of listening to God. If you want more resources on hearing God’s voice, check out the following resources.

    • The Book of Common Prayer: Why to Talk to God. This first set prayer books sets the stage for how much God wants to speak to you. This book removes false beliefs and strengthens faith by looking at Scripture to grow your confidence in prayer.
    • Hearing God. This book from Peter Lord was one of the first books I read on this topic. It is a great resource for those who want to take God speaking seriously.
    • 4 Keys to Hearing God’s Voice. This book from Mark Virkler is what I commonly hear recommended these days. It is simple and easy to put into practice.
    • The Pursuit of God. This classic from A.W. Tozer is not so much about hearing God speak, but the pursuit he discusses is more applicable with the awareness that God is seeking a personal connection.

Finally, listen to this song, God, You Speak. Sing along and allow the words be a declaration of truth. Sometime we repeat the truths until our minds start to actually believe them. God’s voice brings life, gives strength to follow, and fills us with hope for tomorrow.

Hearing God is less about attaining perfect certainty and more about cultivating a relationship that trusts His presence. As you practice, you will find His voice becoming clearer, kinder, and truer than the noise that once drowned it out.

    Lyrics to God, You Speak

    [Verse 1]
In the quiet, in the thunder
In my heart, I hear Your wonder
Every word You breathe is fire
    Calling me to something higher
You don’t shout, You draw me near
You remind me why I’m here
    Every doubt begins to fade
When I hear what You say

    [Pre-Chorus]
You don’t speak to shame me
    You speak to name me
You call me chosen, You call me free
    You call me into destiny

    [Chorus]
God, You speak and I can hear You easy
Every word You say goes straight to me
Your voice brings life, gives strength to follow
Fills my heart with hope for tomorrow
God, You speak and I believe what You say
You’re calling me to shine Your way
You tell me who I am, I believe
Yeah, God, You speak and I’m set free

    [Verse 2]
You say I’ve got heaven’s spark
Even when I lose my mark
You say grace was always there
    Lifting me from deep despair
    You’re reshaping what I see
To see You inside of me
    Every lie begins to break
When I hear the words You make

    [Bridge]
You’re saying I’m strong when I feel weak
    You’re saying I’m light when I can’t see
You’re saying I’m made for something great
To bring Your kingdom into this place
You’re saying, “Child, I’ve called your name
Don’t you hide your holy flame”
Your truth is the song in me
    It’s my identity

If we only stopped to hear
We’d see You’re closer than our fear
    You’re declaring over me
    Heaven’s melody!
