10 Things to Pray for Addiction Recovery

    set you free of addiction

Addictions can be very debilitating for the person and their family. This post on addiction recovery prayers is geared to give some traction in gaining help from God. The greatest thing people afflicted with addiction need is hope—hope life can be different and life can be better.
This prayer list is written for those in addiction to pray over themselves, but it can just as easily be tweaked so friends and family can support their loved ones in addiction through their prayers.

The prayers are written as statements. Speaking them over yourself brings you into agreement with how God sees you which will lead to a transformation of the mind. Pray knowing that this is God’s will and He will answer your prayers.

10 Things to Pray for Addiction Recovery

    1. I am forgiven and protected by God. I choose to release all those that have hurt me and bless them that I may pursue life. (more)
    2. My mistakes don’t define me, but are transformed by the grace of God. Therefore I release shame off of me and receive love from God and others.
    3. People who know the real me will never reject me because God says I am too awesome to reject.
    4. I have not missed God’s best for me, so I eagerly look to God for His vision of my future.
    5. As I reveal what’s going on inside of me, I will know true friendships and I will like myself more. Hiding leads to bondage.
    6. As I look to God, He will lead me into right choices and give me the strength and protection as I hold to those decisions. Every small decision will either strengthen or weaken my ability to stay in freedom; therefore I will also trust God with them.
    7. God loves me for who I am, and His love touches everything I experience. I will look for His love to me throughout my day.
    8. God will lead me to people who I can trust to believe in me. People who I can enjoy and they can enjoy me.
    9. Nothing can separate me from God’s love and His grace is always available for me to access.
    10. I can hear God’s voice because He wants to speak to me.

    Additional Affirmation for Recovery

Michael IngramThis is a great prayer Kevin. If I was to add anything it would be that God always gives us a way out of anything,(exit ramp)& to pray that He REVEALS it to us.

    • God always provides a way out of any temptation, and I will expectantly look for and walk through those doors so that I will not fall.

    1. So good, I can so relate that these are all HUGE areas where I really have struggled in believing the truth in God bringing me into a place of freedom, honesty, and acceptance. Really good

      1. Dear Steven,
I appreciate your comments. Each of these have been very helpful to me. I remember laughing when I felt God give me #3 as it caught me off-guard. I feel the same about you. You are completely awesome.

    2. This is a great prayer Kevin. If I was to add anything it would be that God always gives us a way out of anything,(exit ramp)& to pray that He REVEALS it to us. I was addicted to alcohol for 28 yrs. My biggest problem for a long time was that I thought I had no problem. I could handle it. My worst days of drinking & driving or hanging out at bars, staying out half the night, getting thrown in jail & such were over. All I did was have a few drinks each day to take the edge off, relax, unwind. I didn’t push alcohol on anyone when they came over. Those folks were all grown, they could make their own decisions, there grown ups afterall. I always told them where everything was & to make theirself at home but never said HERE, have one!
One day my oldest daughter(10yrs old) was asking my wife a biblical question & my wife as many times in the past referred her to me. (I’ve been “churched” most my life & had a lot of the bible stored away in my head…somewhere) My daughter asked my wife “Why do you always send me to him?….He Drinks!
Suddenly all the excuses I was making to prevent taking a hard look at the “Big Picture” were crushed with one blow from a ten year old. (DOOR OPENED-prayer answered- family had been praying for God to help me overcome alcohol)
I was devastated. I could handle being a stumbling block for others by rationalizing that they were old enough to make their own decisions, but being one for my daughter that could possibly cause her trouble or to fall away from God later in life was too much.
I had tried to quit before, more than once & failed miserably. I knew there was only one possibility for me, & that was a miracle.
I got rid of all alcohol in the house then prayed to All Mighty God that I needed Him to set met free from this addiction, that I would no longer be a stumbling block for my daughter or anyone else. ( I had told God b4 that I couldn’t quit, but never pleaded w/ Him like this b4 to intervene.)
I gave God every part of my life that night, left no door closed to Him. I asked Him to shut any doors I had opened in my own strength, & to open the one door He had for me to go thru & shine the light on my path that I may follow w/out stumbling. I felt an overwhelming peace come over me & knew instantly God had answered my prayer. (DOOR CLOSED){When I got up the next morning my wife asked me how I was going to do this?”The last time you tried to quit was a living Hell for everyone around you.” I replied, it’s different this time. Times in the past, I tried in my own strength. Knowing exactly where the supply I gave up was at if I decided to go back. This time, I asked God to break the chains & free me, & I gave it to Him, Satan has no hold of which to tempt me.} I am still following that path although I’m many doors past that point now. I thank God every time I pass that familiar liquor store now that i’m going passed it instead of stopping at it. I am looking at going into ministry training soon(DOOR OPENED)& thank God for all He has done in my life. Praise God! Christ is King!!!

“When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.” (Matthew 12:43-45 NIV)
—>I reminded myself of this verse before I prayed for release, I did not want to battle this addiction again in the future & certainly would not want to be overtaken into a worse condition.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28 NIV)

I know this is a little long, it started off as just wanting to mention asking God to reveal an exit ramp to the person locked into a one way street going the wrong way on the addiction prayer & kinda spilled over.
Anyhow, have a great day & God bless.
