God Will Never Leave Us
Last week I reviewed The Greatest Showman and made it clear that I found plenty of inspiration from the movie. One of its songs which I keep thinking about is Tightrope. This song comes near the arch of the movie when P.T. Barnum is off chasing his dreams in an unhealthy way. Against the advice of his colleague and wife, he goes on a travelling tour with another woman and almost ruins everything.
The setup of Tightrope can hide its beauty, but I feel it is a wonderful song that can speak to our faith and build up our relationship with God if we allow it.
The thing I like about the song is that while life is an adventure with God, it is not one that we have to take. We get to make a choice about whether we will follow Him into the great unknown. There will be mountains and valleys and times of being afraid that we may fall, but it will all be worth it to experience life with God.
God’s Tightrope is an Adventure of Faith and Risk
Hebrews 11:6 tells us that it is impossible to please God without faith. Therefore experiencing the joy of God over us will call us into a life always in motion and risking everything. This is what a love affair with God will lead to. We lose track of everything else because life is found in His presence.
Will it be safe? God never promises safety, but we will be fully alive and living beyond ourselves. Why should He call us to things we already know we can do? By calling us to stretch ourselves, we realize we are capable of doing more than we ever dreamed possible. Nothing will be impossible for us who are united with Christ.
What is Your Adventure With God?
If you have been following this blog for a while, you know my adventures have led me to move my family to locations across the US and around the world. My wife and I started a farm in China to help teenage orphan girls. I have quit my job a few times without any known backup plans. We have tried twice to adopt another daughter into our family. We have taken in a mother and child in need of safety from an abusive husband/father.
I don’t mean to sound prideful, but I want to encourage you that this is an area in my life with God that I am passionate about. Abraham had to leave everything he knew in order that God may start a new people from him that would live by faith. Your adventure may not sound as exotic, but every step of faith can be challenging. You may
- decide to start trying to have kids
- change careers or start your own business
- agree to volunteer at your child’s school
- go visit someone in the hospital
- ask your girlfriend to marry you
Life is full of potential adventures if we would only bring God along into the process. Tightrope was a lovely reminder of the joy that can be found in saying yes to the adventure with God. He is always working and eager for us to join Him in advancing His kingdom. Ask God what is the adventure He wants to take you on next.

Ah yes, life is indeed an adventure. At 72 I am not likely to have the kind of awe-inspiring adventures that I might have had earlier, but I wake up every morning feeling like that day will be an adventure all on it’s own. I ask God to lead me wherever He will, and that can definitely lead to some surprising twists. Watching God at work in my life and my world is cause for awe and wonder.
