God’s Eyes on Me
There was a time when I did not trust myself to lead anything. I stayed behind the scenes and helped others succeed. It felt safe. If something went wrong, it would not fall on me. I could still be part of something good without the risk.
I didn’t realize that underneath this “humble” belief was something deeper. I believed I was the one who breaks things, so I kept my distance from being in charge. Because if I was in charge and it didn’t work, then I would be the reason.
I had already decided who I was. And I lived inside that belief. But God did not see me that way.
The Way We See Ourselves
Most people carry a quiet story about themselves. It forms over time through mistakes, wounds, and moments that did not go the way we hoped. It becomes a lens we look through.
The thoughts are often simple. I always mess things up. I am not ready. Someone else would do this better.
At first, they feel like passing thoughts. But over time, they begin to shape decisions. They set limits on what we will try and what we avoid.
We hold back from stepping into new things. We hesitate when opportunity comes. Not because God is holding us back, but because we hold ourselves back.
Peter’s Story Feels Familiar
Peter knew what it was like to fail in a moment that mattered. He walked closely with Jesus for three years. He saw miracles and heard truth with his own ears.
He was bold and passionate. The kind of person who stepped out first. The kind who believed he would never turn away. He told Jesus as much.
But then, on the night Jesus was betrayed, Peter denied Him. Not once, but three times. After being told by Jesus it would happen. And, after proclaiming he never would.
You can imagine the weight of that moment. The regret and confusion. How could he turn on the One who so dearly loved? Could he God ever trust him?
So Peter went back to fishing. Back to what was familiar. Back to something that did not require him to face the failure he carried.
A Confused Heart Meets Jesus Again
At the end of the Gospel of John, Jesus appears on the shore. The disciples do not recognize Him at first. Then Peter realizes it is Jesus. Peter seems excited and a bit panicky.
He throws on his clothes and jumps into the water. He swims to shore, then goes back to help pull in the boat. It feels scattered, like a man who is not fully sure where he stands.
Have you ever felt that way? You want to be close to God but are unsure He will accept you? Feeling called to something great, but unsure how that could be true.
Jesus Does Something Different
When Jesus speaks to Peter, He does not press into the failure. He does not ask Peter to explain himself. He does not bring up the denials. Instead, He asks a simple question: “Do you love Me?”
Once we know that’s all He requires, then we can hear what He sees in us. He speaks something better than correction. He knows if He can get us to see ourselves as He sees us, then the rest will work itself out.
Feed My lambs. Take care of My sheep. Feed My sheep (John 21:15-17).
Jesus was not questioning Peter’s devotion. He was reminding him that He knew Peter loved Him. And in the place of love, Jesus still saw Peter as the foundation of His church.
This Is Where Everything Changes
Peter saw a man who failed in a defining moment. Jesus saw a man He created for great things. And Jesus was right. That difference in perspective changes everything.
We can live from our own view of ourselves, shaped by mistakes and fear. Or we can begin to agree with what God says is true. Scripture tells us we are new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). It says we are made righteous through Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21). It calls us adopted, chosen, and set apart (Ephesians 1:5; Colossians 3:12; 1 Peter 1:15).
These are not future titles. This is how God sees us, and He invited us to live in this view today.
Living From a New View
When you begin to see yourself the way God does, something shifts inside. The old labels start to lose their weight. The fear of failing again begins to loosen. You stop disqualifying yourself before you even begin. You stop hiding behind safer roles. You begin to step forward with confidence.
Not because you have become perfect. But because Jesus already paid for what once held you back. You are no longer trying to earn your place. You are living from a place that has already been given.
A Simple Invitation
- Take a few moments today. Sit with God and ask one honest question. God, how do You see me?
Do not rush past what comes to mind. Do not filter it through your past or your doubts. Let Him speak, and let it settle in your heart.
Then listen to this song, God’s Eyes on Me. Let it be more than music. Let it become a declaration over your life.
You are not what your mistakes say. You are who He says you are. And He sees you clearly.
Lyrics to God’s Eyes on Me
[Verse 1]
I used to stare at my reflection, only seeing what I lack
Counting every imperfection, always holding myself back
But heaven whispered in the silence, said, *”You’re more than you believe”*
And now I’m walking in that freedom, ‘cause I finally see what He sees
[Pre-Chorus]
No more shadows, no more lies
I’m standing tall beneath His skies
Every scar’s a holy sign
Every flaw’s a piece divine
[Chorus]
I see me, through God’s eyes on me
Every broken part, He set it free
Yeah, the light inside, it burns so deep
No more hiding of who I’m meant to be
I see me, through God’s eyes on me
[Verse 2]
I’m not chained to my mistakes, I’m reborn in grace and gold
Every fear that used to shake me, fades as love takes hold
He painted stars inside my story, turned the ashes into flame
And when I move, I move in glory, yeah, I’ll never be the same
[Pre-Chorus]
No more voices telling lies
I’m grounded deep in paradise
His reflection in my soul
That’s the truth that makes me whole
[Chorus]
I see me, through God’s eyes on me
Every broken part, He set it free
Yeah, the light inside, it burns so deep
No more hiding — I’m who I’m meant to be
I see me, through God’s eyes on me
[Bridge]
I’m a masterpiece, not a mystery
I see strength where pain used to be
[Final Chorus]
I see me, through God’s eyes on me
Every broken part, He set it free
Yeah, the light inside, it burns so deep
No more hiding of who I’m meant to be
I see me, through God’s eyes on me
