How to Pray for Hope and Faith
I received this request from a reader last week about how he was struggling with his faith and wanting some guidance on how to pray for hope and restoration of his faith. This is a great question because each one of us will face trials of many kind (John 16:33). We will be tempted to give up hope and return to focusing on things we can accomplish with our own strength.
I think the best thing to do in these times is to remind ourselves of who God is and how He views us. It is not ignoring what is going on presently – go ahead and feel the pain and frustration of your situation – but don’t stay there. When you read the Psalms, you constantly see David or the other Psalmists mentioning to God their problems, but usually there is a change in the Psalm about trusting God or His unfailing love. This is our pathway to hope.
Pray Until You Believe
Faith comes from hearing and a great way to hear the word of God is through your own lips (Romans 10:17). By praying and speaking out who God is and how He views you, you give your faith something to hold onto. You are also making a choice to believe those truths over what you feel or see.
Below there is a sample prayer you can pray for hope and faith to be strengthened in your life. Use this to help you create one more specific to your life circumstances. Each phrase is taken from Scripture, so we know it is true. If you are struggling to believe those statements, take some time searching the Bible for where they are found and ask God to help you to believe them.
If you are looking to increase your faith and hope for God to work in your life, pray this prayer for thirty days or until you believe it to be true for you.
A Prayer for Hope and Faith
God, I need You in my life. I want you in my life. You say that if I would seek You, I would find You – if I would draw near to You, You would draw near to me. I am seeking and drawing near. I want more of You.
God, I am Your child. You know me. You love me. There was never a time You didn’t have a good plan for my life. Even now, Your intentions are good for me. I choose to trust You will work out all things for my good. Thank You for where I am now. And, thank You that this is not where I will stay. With You, I always have hope.
You are working within me to finish the good work You started. I am created to be full of faith. Being a person of faith comes naturally to me because it is how I am made. I can easy hear Your voice in every situation because Your sheep know Your voice. Your words bring life; there is no one else I want to listen to. The enemy’s voice brings despair and steals my faith and hope. Therefore, I reject every thought that doesn’t lead to hope.
I choose joy… always. I will sing and enjoy every spiritual blessing in Christ. God, You supply my every need: financial, vocational, relational, medical… every need. I have received the power of the Holy Spirit to live confidently in Christ. He reminds me of everything Christ has said. The same power that raised Christ from the dead lives within me. I will not live in fear. I can do all things in Christ. Nothing is impossible because God is with me.
Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life. I can expect God to answer my prayers. He would give His life for me; why would I think He would withhold anything from me? Nothing can separate me from His love for me. He is glad I am alive and He gets to be with me. He is not ashamed of me but proud to call me His. And, He has given me authority because He believes in me. I have hope for my future and look forward to what God has in store for us together.
