To persevere in prayer we have to be convinced of the goodness of God.
Where is the Goodness of God in All This Evil?
It is easy to get discouraged in prayer when we continue to pray over things that God appears to not answer. We see the news and hear of another senseless shooting, another natural disaster, another leader exposed of corruption, another bad thing after another bad thing. We pray for our loved ones to come to know Jesus, yet we continue to watch them walk away. What’s the point?
The Goodness of God is His Glory
When Moses asked to see God’s glory, God hid him in cleft of a rock and made all of His goodness pass by Moses (Exodus 33:19-23). The glory of God is His goodness. He is so good that it would overwhelm us if we fully comprehended it. Whenever we get a glimpse of the goodness of God, He is even better than that.
When the world seems to be getting more evil… when our lives appears to be falling apart… when we can’t see how things could turn around… we need to lean into the goodness of God.
No matter what we do, God will be good to us. He can’t help it; that is who He is. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). While we were enemies to God, He pursued us. God is always good.
I remain confident of this:
I will see the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living. – Psalm 27:13
The Goodness of God is Who God Is
We need to depend on His goodness to keep us from falling into despair. He will work together all things for the good of those who love Him and are called by His name (Romans 8:28). As a Christian, that is you.
If you have a great quiet time and pray for several people, God will be good to you. If you forget about God all week and do whatever you want, God will still be good to you. And, if you completely run away from God and make other people’s lives miserable, God will be good to you then, too.
Just as we can’t earn God’s love, we can’t earn His goodness. He can’t change who He is. This gives us confidence to approach the goodness of God in prayer. We don’t have to fear His anger or wrath; all of that went to the cross.

How to Enjoy the Goodness of God in Prayer
If He is always good to us, then why do we try to doing the hard things like waking up early to spend time with Him? Because we know by spending time with Him, we become more aware of His goodness toward us, so that it removes all the insecurities from our heart. We align ourselves with the good He wants for us and stop fighting it with our poor choices.
Let’s remove all the burdens off of prayer. You get to pray and spend time with a good God. Your prayers are powerful because God is good. Let’s get our eyes off everything that is not good and actively seek the goodness of God all around us. Then we can see how to partner with His goodness and will bring the glory of God to our world.
I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, – Ephesians 1:18-20
