How Are We To Pray About the Same-Sex Marriage Ruling?

Let’s Not Start a Fight

Let me be honest, I didn’t want to write this post. There are so many heated arguments on both sides of the issue, and I don’t want to add fire to this dividing topic. However, everyone’s Facebook feed seems to be filled with an opinion on either side, and I have not seen much guidance on how to find God in the midst of this.

Since much has been said about the right and wrong about the same-sex marriage ruling in America, I will not intentionally be offering any views either way on this issue, other than people on both sides have at times not been acting lovingly. What I feel the need to speak on is how do we pray. How do we find God when we don’t like what’s going on?

How to View World Events

Joseph was taken from a father who loved him, sold by his own brothers, enslaved in a foreign land. He was then blamed and jailed for a crime he didn’t do, and then forgotten by those he helped along the way. His life was turned upside down, but when he had a chance to describe what happened to him, he said what was meant for evil, God meant for good (Genesis 50:20).

God scoffs at the plans of his enemies (Psalm 2:1 & 4). He says He works all things out for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28). Does this mean that nothing bad ever happens? No, but if all you can see is evil and you have lost hope, than you are not looking at the things God is looking at. It is those that are without God that are without hope (Ephesians 2:12). We have an eternal hope.

God is Still in Control

I mention all of this to remind us that whatever negative view we may have about the recent same-sex marriage ruling in America, let’s remember that God is still on His throne. He is not surprised by the recent events. He is not confused about what to do next. He is not worried someone will vote Him out of heaven. Things may happen that He doesn’t want, but He is not powerless to bring change.

Let us look to Him for His plans. Let us not assume He wants things changed the way we do and in the timing we want it. This will lead to frustration in your prayers. Let’s ask God what is His perspective and pray accordingly.

Look for God’s Provision of His Grace

With regards to this current situation regarding same-sex marriage in America, what I feel like He is saying to me is Romans 5:20. Where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more. I don’t think the sin He means is what most Christians expect, the sin of homosexuality. I sense the sin of fear, of hopelessness, of wanting to control others, and of making decisions apart from God. These sins are becoming more and more abundant. The promise we have is that as sin increases, grace also increases.

Let us pray into this truth that God’s grace may become apparent to all. Let us look for it and expect it to find it because of this promise. Let us speak into the grace that we find that others may begin to focus on God’s grace as well. Too often things happen we don’t like and we focus on the sin. This will lead us to hopelessness and fear. Let us find the grace of God that He promises so that our hope may be renewed and so that we have something to offer the world around us. That is how I feel we should pray about this same-sex marriage ruling and about many other things as well.
