Living in Asia I have been amazed at all of the Christmas decorations. There are Christmas trees up at several stores. The local Wal-Mart has its employees wearing Santa hats. And, I often hear Christmas music playing, even the ones that say Jesus.
Is the World Taking Christ Out of Christmas?
One of my friends made the observation that the Starbucks here will also play Christmas music, but when the songs are more like Christian hymns, it will only play the instrumental version of those. This reminds me of the outrage Lowe’s Home Improvement received a few years ago by selling “holiday” trees. Should we worry about how many are trying to take Christ out of Christmas? Let’s face it, if we move one letter in Santa’s name, we get our great enemy!
Christmas is a weird time of year. Christians love it because we celebrate the birth of Christ. However, non-Christians also celebrate it. They either like the gift-giving, time with family, time off work, the lights and decorations, etc. Whether they know the reason for Christmas or not, we can’t expect them to enjoy the season for that same reason as us.
Why I Am Not Upset By Merry Xmas Signs
Either way you look at Jesus is in the season. In general people are friendlier and giving. And whether they know it or not, their Santa Claus reminds me of Jesus. To me Jesus is everywhere because He has placed Himself in Christmas. Therefore I can watch Elf and be drawn into themes that represent the heart of Jesus. To me Christmas is synonymous with the birth of Christ. Therefore any representation of Christmas reminds us of how He placed Himself in our world.
Emmanuel means God with us. Jesus has come and has brought all of who He is to our world. His love, his kindness, his power is here available to us. Christmas time allows the rest of the world to tap in a little more than normal.
Religion Worries About Form
Relationship Enjoys the Person
We are not trying to advance a religion. Religion will get upset when you try to change the story. As Christians we enjoy a relationship with Jesus. No matter what the world does to the celebration, we keep connecting to Him. He is our heartbeat. He is our love. And, He is not worrying about whether people know why they are happy.
Sure, Jesus wants everyone to know Him, but He doesn’t withhold His love for them until they acknowledge Him. He continually pours out love until people are so overwhelmed they decide to respond. Don’t let other people’s method of celebration steal the source behind your joy. Instead use your knowledge to freely overpower more people with God’s love. Bless and not curse. Speak life and not death. Let the joy of Jesus and His kingdom filter how you see everything.
