God Makes Things for Beauty

La ALHAMBRA and Generalife Walkway

Lately in my personal times with God I feel like we have been in a great throne room. It has a huge open space with a few thrones and large pillars in the main area. The other day I paid more attention to my surroundings and became aware that the place was empty except God and myself. I asked God why it was so empty. I felt that He said it was a sitting room where He met with His friends. Why then is it so big, if it is not intended to be for large groups?

“In heaven things are made for beauty not merely utility.”

None of what I saw or experienced may have been from God. I am not trying to add to Scripture; it is just a way that helps me personalize my experience with God. But, I have continued to dwell on this statement the last few days. Is it true? What are the implications of it?

I thought about how in heaven the streets are made with gold (Revelation 21:21). I have often heard this explained that the things are great value here are of little value there. This doesn’t seem to be the case. There are many things in Revelation made with gold that would not be of little value, as in crowns. The streets are made with gold because it is beautiful.

Jesus describes that flowers of the field as more beautiful than all of Solomon’s splendor (Luke 12:27). We know that in God’s creativity that He has given each of us with unique fingerprints. Each snowflake is different. Each zebra’s stripe pattern is different. God creates things for beauty and not just utility.

Therefore, if we are made in God’s image and if we are to request God’s kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven, then we are to also create things for beauty. On this Christmas season, let’s bring beauty into our world. Make those around you feel special and appreciated. Go beyond what is required and bring life into whatever you are doing.
