Get Organized

As we all know, New Year’s is a popular time to make resolutions. Many people resolve to “get organized” in the coming year. How many times have you made that resolution? How many times have you stuck with it?

One of the ideas I teach clients is that of not biting off more than you can chew. In the case of New Year’s resolutions, if you know that a year-long commitment to get organized is more than you can handle, why not try a “Get Organized Month” instead?

That is exactly what NAPO (National Association of Professional Organizers) has done. They have declared January “Get Organized Month.” This year is the first annual “GO Month,” and their goal is to help people understand the benefits of being organized, what professional organizers do, and how we in our profession can enhance people’s quality of life.

I am a member of NAPO and will be speaking at several different places in Winston-Salem and surrounding areas the beginning of the year to help people meet their goals to “get organized.” Come out to see me!

Here are some great things to do in January:

    • Think about the things you really want to get out of this year. Do you want to learn one new activity? Do you want to restore a broken relationship? Have you always wanted to watch the top 100 movies on the AMA list? Choose two or three things you really want to accomplish in the next 12 months and write them down. Set deadlines on your calendar, and keep up to date with them, to make sure you are moving toward your goal. Be specific. (For example, sign up for guitar lessons by February 1.)
    • Make your resolutions challenging, yet doable. If you are not overwhelmed with the task, then you will be more likely to keep with it. Also, make the resolution measurable so you will be motivated to continue as you see results. For instance, if you want to organize one cluttered room in your house, start with having a goal that one corner or one drawer will be done by the end of January.
