Why Christians Should Pray for Healing

Why Christians Should Pray for Healing

I have been absent from the blog the last couple weeks due to having high fever then passing it to my wife. Having sickness run through my family caused me to think again what I really believe about prayer for the sick.

Confidence in Prayer for Healing and Recovery

Several years ago I read the Transferable Concepts by Bill Bright. Throughout many of the concepts Dr. Bright uses the verse:

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.” – 1 John 5:14-15

The invitation is to read the Bible to find the will of God. As you ask God for those things that are His will, you can have confidence that God will give it to you. If you want God’s provision to love someone, you can have confidence with that request because you know that God has asked you to love one another (John 13:34). If you have someone that you would like to come to Christ, you can have confidence with those prayers as well because God wants none to perish but all to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). As we read the Bible verses about healing, we then have confidence that it is God’s will to heal the sick person.

    Believe God, Not Your Circumstances

A few years after coming across these truths, I was confronted with my beliefs about addictions. I had a belief set in that there were some sins that were going to stay with Christians until we reach heaven. This was because there were some sins of addiction that were following me through the years. No matter how hard I prayed, the sin stayed. I took on the belief that I would never be free of the addiction.

But the truth really is that sin shall no longer by my master (Romans 6:14). I have been set free from sin (Romans 6:18). My experience may try to tell me one thing, but I must hold on to what God says and pray into His will for my life.

Why Christians Should Pray for Healing

Prayer for healing for a friend should be the same. I may pray for many people and they seemingly do not get healed. But that should not deter me. My faith is in the unseen not the seen (2 Corinthians 5:7).

Bible Scriptures on healing are clear. Jesus sent out the twelve and the 72 telling them to heal the sick (Matthew 10:1; Luke 10:9). It is the heart of Jesus for us pray for the sick and see them get well. There is no sickness in heaven. Jesus bore every curse of sin on the cross (Galatians 3:13).

Therefore any curse we now suffer is something that is hanging around past its time. We are to appropriate the works of the cross for our situation. If our prayer for the sick person doesn’t immediate lead to them getting better, don’t assume it was not God’s will for them to be healed. Jesus went to the cross to show you it is always His will for good towards you. Don’t get discouraged, but gain confidence that healing is God’s will and pray knowing God is on your side.
